On behalf of the members of the Wisconsin Council of Administrators of Special Services (WCASS), we wish to express our shock and great sadness regarding the incident that occurred in Mount Horeb on Wednesday. Our members stand ready to assist students across the state as we grieve together.

These can be difficult conversations to navigate with your students and families.  Below are resources to assist our communities across the state:

  • The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction has a one-page resource intended for families to help process grief and traumatic events.
  • The DPI's Student Services/Prevention and Wellness team has a dedicated webpage with content related to school safety and crisis response.
  • The Wisconsin Department of Justice's Office of School Safety (OSS) has resources to support recovery after schools are impacted by or exposed to a crisis event.
  • Interventions are evidence-based and tailored to the needs of the school community. You can request OSS crisis response and recovery support by contacting OSS at 1-800-MY-SUSO-1 (1-800-697-8761), or by emailing them at [email protected] 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Who We Are

The Wisconsin Council of Administrators of Special Services, Ltd. (WCASS) is a professional organization comprised of over 350 members who administer and support special education programs throughout the state of Wisconsin. The organization was founded in 1994 by a group of special education administrators and pupil services administrators, coming together to share resources and information to better serve students in Wisconsin. The new organization chose the title that merged our two names.
